I view disagreements with others as a chance to come to a mutually beneficial understanding.
I understand that having disagreements with others is a natural part of life. There are many people in my life, whom I adore dearly, that have opposing views on topics like politics or parenting. And that is okay with me!
After all, I wholeheartedly believe that life is incredibly boring if everyone I encounter simply marches to my drum. A little diversity in life allows me to grow and gain valuable insight that I would otherwise be blind to.
Many times, I come out of a disagreement with a valuable countering opinion. However, I stand my ground if I sense that someone is trying to manipulate me or take advantage of my kindness. I recognize that having an open mind and being a pushover are completely different things!
I do get frustrated with others from time to time, but I try to look at things objectively. I choose to take the high road and I try to come to a mutually beneficial understanding.
I release the need to get exactly what I want all the time; instead, I hold realistic expectations of others and of my interactions. Many people get a mental high from winning every disagreement. However, keeping the peace is far more beneficial to me than attaining a mere minute of bliss.
Today, I am diplomatic in my disagreements. There are two sides to every story and I understand that both parties have motives for making the decisions they do.
Self-Reflection Questions:
1. Do I secretly enjoy arguing with others?
2. How can I assess situations from an objective standpoint?
3. Am I constantly in an “I must win this battle” mindset, or do I truly want to come to a mutual understanding?
